Proper wheat storage methods

A scientific article entitled “Proper wheat storage methods” was prepared by Haider Hussein Ghathith at the University of KufaFaculty of Agriculture in order to store the products of economic crops using some steps shown below:

In order to better store wheat crop thoroughly,  some factors should be taken into account as follows:

1. Stores should be easy to fill and unload, free of moisture.

2. Also, they should be sealed, free of insects and mice.

3. Store depth should be greater than its capacity so that the part exposed to insect infestation is at least.

Factors that caused damaged to wheat when stored are  : –

1 – Humidity at storage :  If the wheat is stored with a high degree of humidity, the activity of embryo increases then generates heat that leads to the growth of rotten fungi.

2 – Poor storage: produced by a bad smell in wheat resulting from the growth of rot fungi on it, and this smell is transmitted to flour or change the color of wheat, then resulting flour with undesirable tan color and bitter taste.

3 – Insects stores :  such as wheat weevil types and grain worm moth.

The most important factors affecting wheat crop are  : –

To ensure that new pre-season assessments are obtained, the quality of the seeds must be ascertained by accurately recording the observations of the fields of multiplication, and examining the seeds in the fields before harvesting or collecting them, as well as in laboratory and store. Quality certificates of the seeds are necessary, and all the necessary tests carried out in the field before harvesting should be made by the government’s agriculture to ensure high quality, free of diseases and weeds, high germination rate as well.

Features of good seed quality : –

1- Seeds should be represented for the same variety.

2- Germination rate should be high.

3- Seeds should be free of other crop seeds.

4- They should be free of weeds and off-types.

5- They should be identical in size.

6- They should be free of diseases and insects. To ensure non-infected seeds with diseases and prevent seedlings soil microbes over past seasons, it is necessary to treat the seeds by appropriate pesticides before planting.
